Its probably easiest to use a download manager and copy the list of urls above into a text file and then open the text file with the download manager. Then you’ll be setup for the Games that empower project as well. We have more software lists planned for future projects.

Intelligence Amplification Panel – Building the Metaverse

Download the MP3 from ITConversations given at the Accelerating Change 2005 conference.

Posted: June 17th, 2006, 3:00pm EST

The Metaverse: the social, media-rich, 3-dimensional Web. In this panel at Accelerating Change 2005, entitled “Building the Metaverse”, two examples of the emerging Metaverse are demonstrated. Philip Rosedale, CEO of Linden Lab, shows off Second Life and David Alan Smith, creator of “The Colony”, demonstrates the Croquet project. What emerges are two similarly powerful interactive systems that are allowing people to interact and be creative together in ways never before possible. As computation spreads ever deeper into our lives, we will all increasingly live in the Metaverse. When you can build the ideal world, what do you build?

It’s the ability to learn tools, not the tools themselves

software tools

From: Mark Shuttleworths Blog :

One of the big debates we are having at the moment in the Foundation is all about how to design a curriculum to stimulate the development of analytical skills. The thing I care most about is that we focus not on the specific set of tools, but on the ability to “learn and apply a current tool set”.

Gobby the free software real time collaborative editor

This screencast was recorded on the spot. You can watch the video above or visit internet archive to download the Gobby video demonstration.

In the video I didn’t really show the user list which is very useful to see who is represented by which color. You can see that in this gobby screenshot.

Read more about Gobby on Wikipedia and follow the links to start using it yourself.

OLPC running Fedora Core

News for OLPC.

  • First video of a working “One Laptop Per Child” laptop
  • Join the pledge “”I will purchase the $100 laptop at $300 but only if 100,000 other will too.”http://www.pledgebank.com/100laptop

I’ve been playing around with streaming media. Cortado looks like the best option. The other option is to convert video to flv using mencoder and play the video using an a open source flash player. The end result is something like Youtube. Below is my example, the next movie will include sound. Hopefully I’ll find someone to collaborate and they can do the voice overs.

This movie shows the Fedora Core OLPC firmware image running on windows using the QEMU emulator. If someone is interested in setting up the same thing I’ll put instructions up on the wiki soon.

Free Software in the Classroom

There’s a nice story at Newsforge called A free education. It tells the story of how Sean “Nz17” Robinson solved a problem for his sisters second grade primary school class by introducing them to free software.

Someone could finish the Games that Empower project by learning how to use the Nullsoft Scriptable Install System, I might get time, it looks like it would be handy for distributing free software on windows. All the popular GNU/Linux distributions usually come with a nice collection of educational software, games and educational games e.g KDE Edutainment project, DebianEdu, Edubuntu and Fedora OLPC.

Squeak and Free Software

The original Squeak release is available under APSL2. The APSL2 is listed as a GPL-Incompatible, Free Software License so this means we have a version of Squeak that is Free Software.

“This is a free software license, incompatible with the GNU GPL. We recommend that you not use this license for new software that you write, but it is ok to use and improve the software released under this license. More explanation is available. “

Podcaster Generator 0.8 is out. I’ve been using and modifying this project. I made some minor changes to the code and here’s a screenshot of the changes I made to the administration menu. You also get a glimpse of the gnome desktop and firefox web browser in action.

Alberto Betella released 0.8 this morning so I’ll start using it. His code is much nicer than mine. Here’s the changes.
