Chip may speed up internet 100 times

I have just read an exciting article posted in the The Sydney Morning Herald about a technological breakthrough by University of Sydney scientists. It could potentially lead to people downloading the latest movie in a few seconds or chatting with small, cheap, video systems. The physicists have developed a revolutionary optical chip that could improve internet speeds to up to 100 times faster than Australia’s networks

“The most exciting thing is that it is just a piece of scratched glass. It is very simple, so it is potentially cheap,” said Ben Eggleton, the director of the university’s Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems, CUDOS.

However the article goes on to say that consumers in Australia would have to wait longer for any commercial product. Mr Eggleton has said “It won’t be deployed in Australia first”. The thumbnail-sized device could be commercialised within five years and used in countries such as Japan, which is “way ahead of Australia” in installing high speed fibre networks.

  1. hi, cool web site and good articles.
The The first step is to learn how to find out what your Internet speed is.The Internet speed is determined by 2 components: the download rate and the upload rate of data which are usually measured in Kilobits per second.
Then after you know the upload and download rate, you can use tools or tweaks to improve your internet speed, or take the decision to change your ISP.

  2. I feel the best network is working in New York. The broadband is at the hight. Secondly in germany, where my friend is connected with me who shares all is knowledge. so I can say….!

I think Sydney scientists have really achieved good remarkable point. internet speeds to up to 100 times faster is a point to appreciate. high speed fibre networks is now really growing, AND I feel till 2015 everywhere there would be no problem of network.
I like the point to use tools or tweaks to improve your internet speed, or take the decision to change your ISP. This is what practically one can do….!

  3. Thats appriciative for the  University of Sydney scientists. You know even Africa is not at back…! But only at metro cities. Space offers high-speed net access to Africa…! But I have exprience that if you’re 5000 miles from a fibre network, you can’t provide fast internet access..! Recently I have got to view that the Opticomm can design build and operate an advanced fibre network incorporating high speedInternet, free-to-air analogue and digital Television-Service, …! What would be said about this…I am yet to exprience.
